Anıtkabir

AAnıtkabir, one of the important structures of our country, is at the top of our list of places to visit in Ankara. In order to decide on the shape of the building in Anıttepe, which was called Rasattepe in the past due to the observatory on it, a competition was held with the participation of 47 projects from various countries.


As a result of the way it reflects the national feelings and its suitability to the land, Prof. Dr. Emin Onat and Assoc. Ahmet Orhan Arda's project was approved and the building was built between 1944-1953. Considered the most important example of the 2nd National Architecture Period, the mausoleum consists of two parts: the Peace Park, which was inspired by Atatürk's motto "Peace at Home, Peace in the World", and the Monument Block, which houses the most important parts of the building complex.


The Ceremony Square, which you will reach by passing the Lion Road in the Monument Block, where the Hürriyet and İstiklal towers form the starting point, is surrounded by towers describing the Liberation Period.

Hamamönü

Ankara Castle


Which has a history of more than 4,000 years, has undergone many repairs as it was used by various civilizations for both defense and settlement purposes.


The military structure, which is not known exactly by whom and when it was built, has managed to reach the present day by preserving its existence completely thanks to these repairs.


Eti Museum, which was established with the suggestions of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk between 1921 and 1948, operated in the Akkale bastion of the castle, which hosts festivals in the summer season. You can visit the historical building surrounded by souvenir shops and cafes and watch the view it has.

Anatolian

Civilizations Museum

Anatolian Civilizations Museum is one of the most important museums on our list of places to visit in Ankara. Anatolian Civilizations Museum, located in the Atpazarı District, southeast of the outer walls of the Ankara Castle, one of which is Veli Mahmud Pasha; the other hosts its guests in 2 Ottoman buildings from the 15th century, built by Rum Mehmet Pasha.


The finds of civilizations that existed in Anatolia from the Paleolithic Age to the present are exhibited in Mahmut Pasha Bedesten and Kurşunlu Han, where the facility, which has a worldwide reputation with its original collection, is located. In this collection, which is presented to the visitors in chronological order, you can also examine the artifacts unearthed from the Temple of Augustus and the tumuli in the region during the construction of the Anıtkabir, which I will tell you about in the following parts of the tour list.

Ankara National Garden is a large urban park in the capital city of Turkey. It offers a variety of recreational activities, including walking paths, picnic areas, and a diverse range of flora. Ethnography Museum

The Ethnography Museum, the first resting place of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, houses the most important examples of Turkish Art from the Seljuk period to the present. It was decided that the building of the museum, which was opened in 1930 on Namazgah Hill in Altındağ, where Friday prayers were held during the War of Independence Period, was built under the supervision of Architect Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu, first to be used as an Archeology Museum and then as a Painting and Sculpture Museum; However, with the opening ceremony, it gained its current function. The exhibition areas in the museum, where the Atatürk Statue, which was commissioned by the Italian Pietro Canonica in 1927 by the Ministry of National Education, welcomes its guests, is divided into categories. In these areas, which you can visit in chronological order, you can have the opportunity to examine many different artifacts, from daily items specific to various regions of Anatolia to carpet and rug collections, from Ottoman period weapons to china and porcelain ornaments. Hacı Bayram Mosque

The Hacı Bayram Mosque, built between 1427 and 1428 by Architect Mehmet Bey, is located in Ulus. The most important part of the religious structure, the outer walls of which were built with bricks on stone, is the Hacı Bayram-ı Veli Tomb, which is right next to it.


At the same time, Hacı Bayram Veli, who gave his name to the historical building, is known as one of the leading religious scholars who lived in the Ottoman period and the founder of the Bayramiye Sect. The mosque, which was first repaired in 1714 by Mehmet Baba, one of the grandsons of Hacı Bayram, after its construction, was lastly renovated in 2011 in accordance with its original form.


During this work, care was taken to preserve the embroidery of Nakkaş Mustafa Pasha, especially in the interior of the building. There is also a tomb belonging to Osman Fazıl Pasha, who lived in the 18th century, in the garden of the building. However, since his coffin was taken to the family cemetery, the octagonal planned Osman Fazıl Pasha Tomb is empty today.

Temple Of Augustus

The Temple of Augustus is one of the oldest structures on our list of places to visit in Ankara… The Temple of Augustus, adjacent to the Hacı Bayram Mosque, was built in BC by King Pylamenes, the son of Amintos, the last ruler of Galatia.


It was built after 25 BC on the ruins of a temple dedicated to the Phrygian god Men. The temple, which was built to celebrate the entry of Galatia, of which Ankara was the capital, under the rule of the Roman Empire, and to prove the loyalty to Emperor Augustus, was converted into a church during the Byzantine period by building additions around it.

The work to unearth the temple, which was found on the way to Amasya by the Dutch Busbecque, whom Emperor Ferdinand sent as an ambassador, was carried out in 1930 by Dr. It was carried out under the leadership of Hamit Zübeyr Kosay. The door of the building, of which some of its walls have survived, still maintains its integrity to a greater extent.


Apart from this door, which draws attention with its engravings, the most important piece found in the excavations around the temple is the inscription called Ankara Monument (Monumentum Ancyranum). This inscription features the work accomplished by the first Roman Emperor Augustus.

The War of

Independence Museum

The First Parliament Building, which is used as the War of Independence Museum. The building, designed by Architect Salim Bey as the clubhouse of the Committee of Union and Progress, was built between 1915-1920.

The 2-storey building with Turkish architectural style hosted parliamentary activities from the time it was completed until 1924. After completing this function, the historical building, which was used as the Headquarters of the Republican People's Party, the School of Law, and the Ministry of Education Building, was turned into a museum in 1961 and opened to the public.


The rooms offered to the government in the cultural facility, which started to be known by its current name since 1981, when the 100th anniversary of Atatürk's birth was celebrated, continue to be preserved in accordance with their originality.


You can examine the Memories of the Great Attack and the correspondence of Atatürk in the museum, where the official correspondence of the period and documents related to the Lausanne and Sèvres agreements, which are considered the turning points of our history, are exhibited.

Rebuplic Museum

Another structure that those who are curious about the founding period of the Republic can visit in Ulus; however, its function was changed and used for the administration of the country II. Parliament Building. The building, whose construction was completed in 1923, was used by the Central Treaty Organization for a period after hosting parliamentary activities between 1924-1960.


The building, where Atatürk's Principles and Revolutions were realized, was opened to the public in 1981 as the Republic Museum after the arrangements. While visiting this museum, you can examine the rooms used by the governments and their sub-units, together with the items of the period, just like in the War of Independence Museum.


You can also have the opportunity to watch the audio-visual show in the general assembly hall and listen to some parts of the Nutuk.

Youth Park

Youth Park, on an area of 275 thousand m², contains opportunities for you to both have fun and relax. The park, where you can go to spend time after visiting the places I recommend to you in Ulus, was brought to the city by the works between 1936-1943, where the swamps that cover some of its current area were dried.


The park, which is thought to meet all kinds of cultural needs of the people of Ankara since the first day it was planned, contains one of the largest theater halls of the city.


You can see a large part of the city from a bird's eye view with the 150-meter Ferris wheel and 45-meter elevator added to the amusement park section with the last renovation work in 2009.

Ulucanlar Prison

The prison and detention center, which operated between 1925 and 2006, was opened to visitors as Ulucanlar Prison Museum after the restoration process that started in 2009 and lasted for 1 year. This facility, which has a very important place in Turkish political and literary life, has witnessed some of the darkest events of the Republican period.


Names such as Yaşar Kemal, Nazım Hikmet, Cüneyt Arcayürek and Yılmaz Güney were imprisoned in this place where the death sentences of Deniz Gezmiş, Yusuf Aslan, Hüseyin İnan from the 68th Generation, and Necdet Adalı and Mustafa Pehlivanoğlu, victims of the 1980 Revolution, were executed. During your visit to the prison museum, you can examine the Hilton Ward and the single cells, and take a look at the photographs and documents of the period it was in operation.
